How to Set Up a Wireless Router

Many citizen end up frustrated and confused when trying to set up a wireless router themselves. They normally exertion to result the setup Cd or instructions that came with the router and end up giving up or paying man else to do it for them.

This article will frame the three basic concepts you need to understand to set up a wireless router yourself. I'm going to show you how to do it without using the setup Cd that comes with your router and without any of the fancy gadgets or push buttons designed to make setting up a wireless router easy. While these methods may seem easy on the surface they don't always work. They also keep you isolated from any insight of what is for real going on. If a easy mistake is made you may get stuck and be forced to turn to man else for help.

Wireless Printer Setup

Once you understand how to set up a wireless router you'll also understand how to set up just about any wireless gadget on the shop including printers, game consoles, iPads etc.

The three basic concepts you need to understand about wireless routers and wireless networking security are:

1. Your Ssid - service Set Identifier. This is a big sounding word that simply means the name of your wireless network. It's best to convert this from the default and give it a name that means something to you but means puny to man else. Something like Ilhmap for "I Love Home Made Apple Pie" is good.

2. Your Encryption Type - You need to understand the hierarchy of wireless encryption. It all started with Wep or Wired Equivalent Privacy. This came appropriate with most B and G routers. As computer processors speeds increased Wep became easier and easier to crack so a new appropriate came out call Wpa. Wpa uses Tkip as it's encryption. Soon after Wpa came out Wpa2 was introduced. Wpa2 uses an even stronger form of encryption called Aes. Some older operating systems and game consoles will only work with Wep. When you can you want to use Wpa or Wpa2. Many times you can select Wpa/Wpa2 which allows you to use both types of encryption with the same password. This is a very popular option when setting up security on a wireless router.

3. Your Pass phrase - This is also known as the password or "encryption key". It's often confused with the router password. The router password is simply the password you use to log into the router. The encryption key is what allows a computer, printer or other network gadget to associate or "associate" with the wireless router. Wep passwords are generated by typing in a word or phrase. The result is normally scrambled into something like "17B295FcA8". You then have to type these hexidecimal characters into each of your devices. Not very user-friendly. Wpa and Wpa2 do not originate difficult to remember hex numbers like Wep. You can simply type in 8-63 characters such as "My dog barks 2 loud". In this example spaces count as characters and the "M" in "My" Must be capitalized.

Now that you understand the basic concepts complicated with wireless networking let's put them to use.

All that's for real left to do now is entrance the routers web interface and enter the parameters mentioned above.

In order to entrance the routers web interface you need to know three things.

1. The routers Ip address.
2. The routers user name and password.
3. If you computer is on the same network as the routers Ip address.

Ip Address

The routers Ip address is normally something like 192.168.0.1, 192.168.2.1 or even 10.0.0.1. The documentation that came with the router should contribute this. If you don't have the documentation simply do a crusade engine crusade for "router make and model default Ip."

Username And Password

The routers username and password is normally along the lines of "admin" and "password". If these don't work simply do a crusade engine crusade on "router make and model default password". If it's a second-hand router you may need to hard reset it to get it back to it's default. Hard resetting normally involves poking a paper clip into a tiny hole in the back of the router and retention it for 15 to 30 seconds and releasing. Once you issue the router will reboot and return to it's installation default settings and you'll be able to use it's default username and password to log on.

Same Network?

If you computer is on the same network as the routers Ip address you'll be able to connect. If not you won't be able to connect. Network devices need to be on the same network to impart with each other unless they're using a special configured router to join their detach networks. Once you know your routers default Ip address simply go your computers command prompt and type in Ipconfig. This will return your computers Ip address.

If the first three "octets" of your routers Ip and your computers Ip line up your on the same network. If they don't you won't be able to connect.

Let's look at some examples of this:

If your routers default Ip address is: 192.168.1.1 and your computer Ip address is 192.168.0.4 you won't be able to connect.

A better illustration of this is as follows:

Same network:

192.168.1.3

192.168.1.30

Different network:

192.168.1.3

192.168.0.30

So if your Pc is not on the same network as the router what do you do?

Simply associate one end of an ethernet cable to one of the four ports in the back of you router and the other to the network port in your Pc and reboot.

When the computer reboots it will automatically pick up an Ip from your routers built-in Dhcp server that will allow you to associate to the router.

Now that all the stars are all properly aligned it's time to associate to the router.

To do this simply:

1. Enter your routers Ip address into your popular browser (Ie, Chrome, Firefox etc.) and hit "enter".

2. Type in the username and password to entrance the router.

3. Find the "Wireless" or "Wireless Security" section in your router and enter the Ssid, Encryption and Pass phrase parameters as discussed above.

That's it!

Once you're done you simply need to enter the pass phrase you created into the wireless utilities in each of your network devices. This is a easy matter of clicking or tapping on your Ssid, entering you pass phrase and clicking on "connect!"

Adsl Wireless Router - How to pick One

Adsl is abbreviation of Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line that means to enjoy internet service through telephone lines made of copper. Adsl wireless routers are attached with telephone lines. They are very easy to set up in order to share internet connection, files, printers and hard drivers everywhere by one of the four ports on the back of the routers. Adsl wireless routers have built-in modem that is plugged directly into your telephone line through a micro filter.

As there are several kinds of Adsl wireless routers, it is very confusing to choose the best suits your requirements. In fact, it depends on the speed and coverage that you need for your internet connection. Some of the Adsl wireless routers are wireless G, Dual Broadband and Adsl wireless N routers. Wireless G routers are use for setting up a wireless network at home or in the office without cables. It is ideal for modest properties and web surfing below 8Mbps speed. Dual Broadband automatically chooses the frequency with the most available bandwidth. As far as Adsl N routers are concerned, they are the answers to full range and occasional dropouts.

Wireless Printer Setup

In fact, wireless components spin through common protocol. These are defined by approved 802.11. Adsl wireless routers might maintain one or more protocols depending on their model. If your Adsl wireless router only supports a particular protocol, all of your computers associated with it must have a card or adapter that matches this router.

You should also choose the best Adsl wireless router that supports Voice Over Ip. It means it should maintain services like Skype over which you can enjoy unlimited video calls. Some models do not accommodate this service, while some latest models specifically artificial for Voip accommodate this service. As far as gamers are concerned, they should have Adsl wireless routers that maintain QoS or quality of Service. This is a specific application for online gaming. It prevents occasional delays and interruptions when a gamer is engaged in online gaming. Moreover, user's hosting server and hardware also contribute to performance of the router in its speed.

Another complication is that prior to the publish of protocol 802.11n, some network cards used to maintain 802.11g that was a preceding standard. Now a router that supports both will be able to spin with both computers simultaneously. However, a router supporting only 802.11n will only maintain the same computer and not that has the card with 802.11g protocol.

The last one is setup. You can entrance setup menu on a router by entering 10.0.0.2 in your Url of any web browser, either it is Firefox or Internet Explorer. Generally, you are to enter a username and password that is supplied in the document with the router. You can administer the Lan by naming it and enabling encryption. You can also check status, open or close some ports for specific applications and some other applications. You can also manually enter the parameters that are required to join together to some desired Ips. These are often available in the documents attached with the routers. In short, Adsl wireless routers are a unblemished solution to your internet connecting problems.

Wireless Router Setup

A router is a type of computer programmed primarily for appropriate change of information. Routers have unique operating systems such as Juniper Networks Junos & Junose, extreme Networks Xos, or Cisco's Ios. Also included are Nvram, Ram, flash memory as well as processors and network interfaces.

The wireless router is a networking device without the need for cables. It also functions as a wireless access point. It is regularly used for relationship to the Internet and other computer network. Routers are operational in wired local area network, wireless only local area network or a blend of wired and wireless local area network.

Wireless Printer Setup

A wireless network is set-up for sharing access to the internet, files, printers, and other computer functions. Wireless network is also used in offices and homes for convenience. One can have internet access and local network relationship in any place in the office or at home. Premise and configuration are worth the efforts.

The first step in wireless router Premise is to pick the right equipment. Equipment should be in accordance with desired set-up. The Equipment should be supportive of the three wireless networking technologies. The three wireless networking technologies are 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g.

A broadband Internet relationship is preferable. A computer should have built-in networking support or a wireless network adapter. Make sure that a wireless router is available and not a wireless access point. Unplug first the internet modem before connecting the wireless router. The modem should be in direct relationship to the Internet. When all of the devices are interconnected, the wireless router would be in communication with the Internet.

Make sure that the proper interconnections are executed. There are variances in the labels of connecting ports depending on the models and manufacturers of the wireless routers. These differences in labeling does not matter, what is prominent is the functions of the devices connected to the routers.

You can now begin configuring the wireless router. The network cable will serve as a relationship in the middle of the computer and the wireless router for the meantime. Open the internet browser and begin configuring the router. The study module of the router will contribute the address and password to be used.

The internet browser shows the configuration page of the wireless router. The user should configure three things unique to the user's network only. First is the wireless network name, otherwise known as the Ssid. Next, a network safety is needed. This safety could be in the form of a Wireless encryption (Wep) or Wi-Fi Protected access (Wpa). An menagerial password, which controls the wireless network, should also be used.
