A Quick Guide to Wireless Networking

1. Valuable Equipment

Right, let's move right along. The first thing to do in setting up a wireless home network is to get the correct equipment. These are the things you need:

Wireless Printer Setup

Wireless home networking kit

This is your basic tool for the network. Typically, these home networking kits come with a firewalled wireless router (e.g. The immensely beloved Linksys Wrt54G). Some also bundle a wireless Pc card for connecting laptops to the network, or a wireless Usb adapter for connecting desktop Pcs.

Windows factory Cds

These are required sometimes while factory of drivers, so its handy to have them colse to first.

Ethernet cables

These are required if you intend to mix wired Pcs into a wireless network. For example, you can connect an Ethernet cable in the middle of the wireless router and a desktop Pc.

2. Install the Wireless Router

Install the wireless router according to the manufacturer's instructions. Contemporary wireless home networking kits make this no ifs ands or buts easy. Just connect the wireless router to power supply, connect the wireless Pc card to your laptop, or Usb adapter (or Ethernet cable) to the desktop Pc. Then insert the factory Cd into one Pc and start the software factory process.

As part of the setup process, you commonly need to surf to a local Ip address, e.g. 192.168.0.1 to setup basic parameters for the router. Most of the options can be left as default, with the exception of Ssid (Service Set Identifier) and encryption settings, which are explained below.

3. Pick the assistance Set Identifier

Wireless networks require a network identification code called the assistance Set Identifier (Ssid). When connecting devices to the network, this is the name you use to specify which network you're connecting to. Make sure you set up this parameter using the router setup page or utility.

4. Encrypt Your Wireless Network

Remember an intruder can no ifs ands or buts gain way to an unencrypted network without too much trouble. Wireless networks these days commonly use the Wep standard to set up encryption. To configure this, go to your router setup page or utility and enter the Wep protection key (usually its a 128 bit hexdecimal text entry you need to key in).

Note this Wep key down. Now, go to each Pc in your network. Open up the control Panel -> Network Connections and elect your wireless network connection. You need to enter the Wep key for the relationship - the manufacturer's should have instructions on how to do this.

5. Sharing the printer

If you intend to share a printer (say from your desktop), then go to your desktop, go to control Panel and elect printers. Right-click your printer icon, and Pick Properties. If there's a Shared tab in the dialog box that appears, click the tab and make sure the share selection is selected.

Conclusion

Guess what? That's it! Setting up a wireless network is as simple as that. You can now no ifs ands or buts check email, share files, or print documents from the relieve of your living room, garage or front porch! So what are you waiting for? Get busy and set up that wireless network now!

A Good Look at Wireless Printers

For years habitancy have been request for electronic devices to be more movable and mobile. Thanks to technology advancements, and smart engineers, we are now able to use those quarterly items but in a more movable way and suitable way. One of these places is the personal computer at home or in the office. It's now inherent to print from other room without drilling holes in the wall.

The days are gone where you have to buy extra Usb cables to connect your printer. The only cable you need is a power cable for the wireless printer. other benefit is that you don't have to worry about cables getting knotted up or creating a mess of wires in the office. The only thing is that a wireless printer costs a bit more than a quarterly one that you can buy. But they make it easy for laptops to connect to and they are normally power efficient.

Wireless Printer Setup

These printers work just like general printers but the setup is slightly different. You will need to input the Ip address of the printer in to the printing software under the network tab. This also requires you to have the wireless printer antenna up and attached properly. If you have a weak single to the printer you may not be able to print or it might even come to be very slow to print even a easy page of text.

The wireless printers that you will see in most computer stores will offer you an all-in-one setup so that you can not only print, but fax, copy, and scan documents with ease. So before you jump to buy a wireless printer just because its wireless, make sure you invest in one that is going to cover all the features that you need. In the long run you will save more money.

How to Set Up a Wireless Router

Many citizen end up frustrated and confused when trying to set up a wireless router themselves. They normally exertion to result the setup Cd or instructions that came with the router and end up giving up or paying man else to do it for them.

This article will frame the three basic concepts you need to understand to set up a wireless router yourself. I'm going to show you how to do it without using the setup Cd that comes with your router and without any of the fancy gadgets or push buttons designed to make setting up a wireless router easy. While these methods may seem easy on the surface they don't always work. They also keep you isolated from any insight of what is for real going on. If a easy mistake is made you may get stuck and be forced to turn to man else for help.

Wireless Printer Setup

Once you understand how to set up a wireless router you'll also understand how to set up just about any wireless gadget on the shop including printers, game consoles, iPads etc.

The three basic concepts you need to understand about wireless routers and wireless networking security are:

1. Your Ssid - service Set Identifier. This is a big sounding word that simply means the name of your wireless network. It's best to convert this from the default and give it a name that means something to you but means puny to man else. Something like Ilhmap for "I Love Home Made Apple Pie" is good.

2. Your Encryption Type - You need to understand the hierarchy of wireless encryption. It all started with Wep or Wired Equivalent Privacy. This came appropriate with most B and G routers. As computer processors speeds increased Wep became easier and easier to crack so a new appropriate came out call Wpa. Wpa uses Tkip as it's encryption. Soon after Wpa came out Wpa2 was introduced. Wpa2 uses an even stronger form of encryption called Aes. Some older operating systems and game consoles will only work with Wep. When you can you want to use Wpa or Wpa2. Many times you can select Wpa/Wpa2 which allows you to use both types of encryption with the same password. This is a very popular option when setting up security on a wireless router.

3. Your Pass phrase - This is also known as the password or "encryption key". It's often confused with the router password. The router password is simply the password you use to log into the router. The encryption key is what allows a computer, printer or other network gadget to associate or "associate" with the wireless router. Wep passwords are generated by typing in a word or phrase. The result is normally scrambled into something like "17B295FcA8". You then have to type these hexidecimal characters into each of your devices. Not very user-friendly. Wpa and Wpa2 do not originate difficult to remember hex numbers like Wep. You can simply type in 8-63 characters such as "My dog barks 2 loud". In this example spaces count as characters and the "M" in "My" Must be capitalized.

Now that you understand the basic concepts complicated with wireless networking let's put them to use.

All that's for real left to do now is entrance the routers web interface and enter the parameters mentioned above.

In order to entrance the routers web interface you need to know three things.

1. The routers Ip address.
2. The routers user name and password.
3. If you computer is on the same network as the routers Ip address.

Ip Address

The routers Ip address is normally something like 192.168.0.1, 192.168.2.1 or even 10.0.0.1. The documentation that came with the router should contribute this. If you don't have the documentation simply do a crusade engine crusade for "router make and model default Ip."

Username And Password

The routers username and password is normally along the lines of "admin" and "password". If these don't work simply do a crusade engine crusade on "router make and model default password". If it's a second-hand router you may need to hard reset it to get it back to it's default. Hard resetting normally involves poking a paper clip into a tiny hole in the back of the router and retention it for 15 to 30 seconds and releasing. Once you issue the router will reboot and return to it's installation default settings and you'll be able to use it's default username and password to log on.

Same Network?

If you computer is on the same network as the routers Ip address you'll be able to connect. If not you won't be able to connect. Network devices need to be on the same network to impart with each other unless they're using a special configured router to join their detach networks. Once you know your routers default Ip address simply go your computers command prompt and type in Ipconfig. This will return your computers Ip address.

If the first three "octets" of your routers Ip and your computers Ip line up your on the same network. If they don't you won't be able to connect.

Let's look at some examples of this:

If your routers default Ip address is: 192.168.1.1 and your computer Ip address is 192.168.0.4 you won't be able to connect.

A better illustration of this is as follows:

Same network:

192.168.1.3

192.168.1.30

Different network:

192.168.1.3

192.168.0.30

So if your Pc is not on the same network as the router what do you do?

Simply associate one end of an ethernet cable to one of the four ports in the back of you router and the other to the network port in your Pc and reboot.

When the computer reboots it will automatically pick up an Ip from your routers built-in Dhcp server that will allow you to associate to the router.

Now that all the stars are all properly aligned it's time to associate to the router.

To do this simply:

1. Enter your routers Ip address into your popular browser (Ie, Chrome, Firefox etc.) and hit "enter".

2. Type in the username and password to entrance the router.

3. Find the "Wireless" or "Wireless Security" section in your router and enter the Ssid, Encryption and Pass phrase parameters as discussed above.

That's it!

Once you're done you simply need to enter the pass phrase you created into the wireless utilities in each of your network devices. This is a easy matter of clicking or tapping on your Ssid, entering you pass phrase and clicking on "connect!"

Can I Use My Printer On More Than One Computer?

Although I will give the instructions for Windows Xp, Windows Vista and Windows 7 are fairly similar.

It is very prominent that the computers that are going to share the printer have the same operating system. You Must make sure that a print driver is ready for the operating system you plan to use or it will not work.

Wireless Printer Setup

Be sure the printer is set up and operating correctly on the computer that the printer is physically related to. Once you are sure take the following steps:

* Left click the start button in the lower left corner of your screen.
* Now left click "Control Panel".
* This will bring up a screen that will whether be kind view or classic view. It doesn't matter which one your in but I will use kind view for this article.
* Click on "printers and other hardware".
* Click "printers and Fax".
* Right click the default printer. This is the one with the check mark.
* Left click "properties".
* Left click the "sharing" tab.
* Now left click "share this printer". You need to type a name for the printer. Make it short so that you will know it when you see it. Example: Deskjet1000 (Do not use spaces)

The steps above only prepares for the following steps.

Now resolve if you have a router that has ports in back of it. Associate a network cable from the computer that you just set up to the router. If your router does not have ports, you will need to buy a switch.

Go to the second computer.

* Left click the start button in the lower left corner of your screen.
* Now left click "Control Panel".
* This will bring up a screen that will whether be kind view or classic view. It doesn't matter which one your in but I will use kind view for this article.
* click on "Printers and other hardware".
* Click "printers and Fax".
* Click "add a printer" settled in the far left column of the page.
* corollary the wizard.
* Click "a network printer, or printer attached to other computer".
* Browse for a printer should be selected.
* Click next and let it find the printer you named above.
* If the search finds the printer double click it and corollary the prompts.

If the above steps do not work I advise seeing a technician to help you. Many things could be wrong.

Be sure to test the printer if it tells you it installed it.

You can also buy a printer switch. However, since the amelioration of Usb technology this can be cumbersome.

Another option is to buy a computer that will act as a print server. Unfortunately this is expensive and the average person will not need this. Many fellowships will use this recipe since you can send large amount of print documents to the printer and it will print them. I do not advise this recipe unless you know how to set it up and that you can afford it. It can be expensive just to buy the computer you will need.

You can now buy wireless printers. These are great but wish the needful skills to get them installed and keep them working. I am not going to discuss these in this article since the setup needed is fairly complicated and some times doesn't work.

Wireless Connectivity and You

As computer connectivity continues to evolve, there is a definite push towards wireless. The idea of wireless connectivity is not new. IrDa, or infrared wireless transportation has been colse to for a while. IrDa uses pulsed infrared light waves to supply wireless connectivity to printers, cell phones, Pdas, laptops and other devices. IrDa is fairly diminutive in its usage parameters, requiring close nearnessy and direct line of sight between IrDa ports. These limitations have led to the marginalization of the accepted as a feasible formula for wireless communication.

In new years, however, we have seen an explosion of wireless technologies. One of the most prevalent wireless technologies has been the 802.11 accepted for local area computer networks. This accepted uses low-level radio waves to send data over the network at reasonably high speeds (up to 54 mbps). The popularity of this wireless accepted is the fact that it isn't diminutive by line-of-sight rules. Internet and other network resources can be accessed through walls or other obstacles without the hassle of wires. This technology has found devoted followers among laptop users who dislike having to carry Ethernet cables to plug into networks wherever they travel.

Wireless Printer Setup

Bluetooth is yet another wireless technology that has been created to cater to the desires of wire-haters everywhere. Bluetooth was created with the intention of giving computer and consumer electronics users a formula of connecting peripherals and devices without the hassle of wires. The Bluetooth accepted uses a obtain wireless pairing protocol to form a link between the two Bluetooth enabled devices, after which the two devices are allowed to converse freely via low-level radio waves. Bluetooth has been used in Macs (Apple was a primary advocate for the standard), wireless keyboards and mice, and more particularly in cell phones and hands-free headsets.

A fairly new wireless technology allows Vga and Ps/2 over radio waves. Wireless Vga essentially allows you to generate a detach workstation up to 100 feet away from the source without having to run postponement cables to the workstation. Other possible uses contain running Vga signals to a ceiling-mounted projector or transmitting graphics to a wall mounted Lcd or plasma advertising display. This wireless Vga technology is still in its infancy, however, and current implementation only allows for use in commercial, school, or government settings. Regardless of current limitations, this technology marks a major step towards eliminating cables from our everyday computer use. Imagine having a mainframe-type central computer in the home or office, with wireless screens and workstations spread throughout that could be relocated as actually as appealing a photo on the wall or shifting a desk. Such are the possibilities.

Another developing and yet-to-be released technology that is finding to build upon the current push for wireless connectivity is the Wireless Usb standard. Supported by clubs like Intel, Microsoft, and Nec, this accepted is intended to build upon the popularity of the current Usb 2.0 standard, with a focus on ease and universality of connection using a wholly wire-free platform. This technology is theoretically so flexible that it may find its way into ubiquitous use in the consumer electronics market. One particularly appealing possible use is in the audio/visual sector. Wireless Usb-enabled Tvs, Dvd players, stereo receivers and speakers could all be made to associate to each other wirelessly, giving you unrivalled flexibility in your audio/visual setup. This is a faster, more broad and easier to use improvement on the wireless Vga technology. Obviously, wireless technology is still in its infant state, but as the technology continues to mature, the possibilities are endless.

Hp Officejet 6500 - Do You verily Need Wireless Printing?

In this day and age we are all getting more and more technical equipment. We are talking all from movable cell phones, mini laptops and other more or less functional gadgets. Some of these gadgets are wireless and some will need to operate by being plugged into a wall plug. If you are like most of the privileged citizen living in the developed countries you are probably getting more and more sick of wires and would rather be without. I know that I would.

And one of the areas where we are starting to see some great improve is in the printer area. We have all been used to having some kind of printer at home and now more and more families owns all-in-one printers that are a scanner, a copier, a printer and a photo printing device. But even with such technical wonders we want more.

Wireless Printer Setup

That is why the major printer clubs such as Hewlett Packard and Canon have started producing wireless printers such as the Hp OfficeJet 6500 or the Canon Pixma. And the fact is that these machines have become very popular and widespread. But before you run out and buy one of these items you would want to think twice. Because not only are they more expensive than similar printers using wires but they are also less carport and if you have ever tried a wireless network for an Internet relationship you know what a pain in the B... That can be.

Besides the higher price and the occasional difficulties with getting a relationship to the printer (not to mention the setup procedure), these devices have any inevitable features as well. One of the major advantages (besides avoiding the cords) is that you can categorically share the printer with all the other house members that are using wireless devices. If you have more than one laptop in the house it can be a real pleasure that you don't have to unplug and re-plug the devices when you need to print. You can all just stay where you are and click print. If more than one is printing at the same time it will just originate a queue.

Whether a wireless printer is right or wrong is hard to say. If you find one that will be easy to setup and that won't cause you to much hassle with lost connections, it will surely be worth the effort. If you are not technically inclined you might want to rethink it or at least get guidance from one of the specialists in the shop where you decide to purchase it.

Adsl Wireless Router - How to pick One

Adsl is abbreviation of Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line that means to enjoy internet service through telephone lines made of copper. Adsl wireless routers are attached with telephone lines. They are very easy to set up in order to share internet connection, files, printers and hard drivers everywhere by one of the four ports on the back of the routers. Adsl wireless routers have built-in modem that is plugged directly into your telephone line through a micro filter.

As there are several kinds of Adsl wireless routers, it is very confusing to choose the best suits your requirements. In fact, it depends on the speed and coverage that you need for your internet connection. Some of the Adsl wireless routers are wireless G, Dual Broadband and Adsl wireless N routers. Wireless G routers are use for setting up a wireless network at home or in the office without cables. It is ideal for modest properties and web surfing below 8Mbps speed.
